Today’s ‘Free Game’ Denied to Fans in Hawaii

There’s still no deal between Comcast and Time-Warner to carry Giants games in Hawaii, and there’s no hint of a deal anywhere. That means Giants games – including the one touted today at MLB.com as the “MLB Free Game of the Day” – are still blacked out in Hawaii, thanks to Major League Baseball’s idiotic “home television territory” policy.

Hey, Bud Selig! You’re condoning something that denies innocent fans the ability to watch our teams because the suits refuse to do the deal! How can you possibly be OK with that? What’s next – muting games so we can’t even listen to them on our computers and smart phones?

At this point, we wouldn’t put it past you and your VIP-box pals.
This is how Hawaii Giants fans "watch" the games.

  1. It's amazing this unfair situation has gone on so long. It makes no sense for Hawaii to be considered the home team area for any major league team. But if that's a requirement, then the L.A. teams are the logical blackout choice since we do get a number of Dodger and Angel games on local cable.

  2. Terry, you're absolutely right! If any West Coast team should be blacked out, it should be the Dodgers -- bankruptcy and all. By providing Dodgers games online at MLB.com, the league is competing with the cable company and game distributor. In other words, the league's stand is completely contradictory. Thanks for pointing that out; I've been too blind about the Giants situation to see it.

  3. Headed to Hawaii in a week. I won't be able to watch games on MLB.com even though I have the MLB package while I'm there. What about at bars that have the regular MLB package through Comcast or Direct TV?

  4. Thanks for commenting, Scotty. You'll probably find a bar somewhere with DirecTV or Dish; their corporate suits have an agreement with Comcast, apparently, but those two services have captured around 6% of the Hawaii market. Comcast's suggestion to "just switch carriers" is bogus. Hawaii's long-suffering Giants fans (3 years now) will appreciate anything you can do to help us end the infamy.
